Customers propagate their own plants. There are many Pinterest hacks and DIY tutorials showing them how to do it. That said, not only will they return to your greenhouse for business, you benefit by teaching them propagation skills.

You may have seen tutorials like this one…

Take Advantage of How Customers Propagate

The above video allows your customers to propagate their plants instead of coming back to you for business, right? While that may be true for this one variety of succulent, customers are looking for diversity in their gardens and containers. They will return to your business for other varieties.

While customers are eager for DIY tutorials, it’s important to also educate them on how your professional touch influences the life of plants. Your equipment, expertise, and care all have an influence that these amateur propagators may not be aware of. If you don’t want to encourage gardeners to take this role on, try to start with educating them on the life cycle of a plant before the sale. Once you do this, they’ll have a clearer understanding of your value. This in in part because of your consideration.

Provide Customers an Experience They Can’t Get on Their Own

Whether you are a nursery or a greenhouse, consider providing classes or educational seminars on the topic. It allows green thumbs to understand the process. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? As you may have already been able to notice, gardeners are getting their education on social media. Customers propagate if they want to propagate.

Regardless of your decision, once your customers seek out answers, they’ll find it. Instead of getting this information from another source, you can provide the tools they need to get started.

Obviously, there’s benefit to promoting the benefits of professional propagation. On top of that you can upsell products to help the plant grow and create a personal bond with the community by positioning yourself as a thought leader.

Position Yourself As A Thought Leader

Positioning yourself as the expert you are is important. A simple way to do this is by incorporating propagation information onto your labels. We’ve previously looked at ways you can utilize labeling design techniques (booklet style labeling or QR codes for saving space). Also, advertise your classes or link to a video blog that covers the benefits of professional propagation.

It doesn’t have to be your own content either. Show customers the steps involved in propagation, and how automation plays into growing ideal plants. Take a look at our own videos on our Propagator Labeling System and incorporate it in your lessons.
